Proteas Legend Herschelle Gibbs Joins Cape Vintages as Marquee Player


One of world cricket’s greatest entertainers is joining the Spirit of Cricket family


The Cape Vintages have completed one of the biggest signings in veterans cricket, securing Proteas legend Herschelle Gibbs as their Marquee Player for the inaugural Spirit of Cricket Over-50s T20 Tournament – Africa.


The eight-team franchise tournament will be played in Cape Town from 10–16 October 2026, bringing together leading over-50s players from across South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia and the wider African cricket community.


Widely regarded as one of the most naturally talented cricketers ever to represent South Africa, Gibbs enjoyed a remarkable 14-year international career and established himself as one of the most destructive opening batters in world cricket.

His involvement is a major coup for the Cape Vintages, the tournament and the continued international growth of the Spirit of Cricket Global brand.


Herschelle Gibbs Career Highlights

During an outstanding international career, Gibbs:

  • Represented South Africa in Test, One Day International and T20 International cricket.

  • Scored centuries in three consecutive ODI innings.

  • Recorded two Test double-centuries.

  • Shared in several record-breaking partnerships with Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis.

  • Became recognised as one of the finest and most athletic fielders of his generation.


Six Sixes in One Historic Over

On 16 March 2007, during the ICC Cricket World Cup in the West Indies, Herschelle Gibbs created cricket history.

Facing Netherlands bowler Daan van Bunge, Gibbs became the first player in One Day International cricket to hit six consecutive sixes in a single over.

The extraordinary achievement remains one of the most iconic moments in World Cup history and cemented Gibbs’ reputation as one of the game’s greatest entertainers.

His unforgettable innings of 175 from just 111 deliveries against Australia in the famous 438-run match is also widely regarded as one of the greatest ODI performances of all time.

Now, one of South Africa’s greatest cricketing icons will bring his experience, knowledge and star power to the Cape Vintages and the Spirit of Cricket Global family.
