Cricket Legend Barry Richards Appointed Tournament Ambassador for Inaugural Spirit of Cricket African T20 Tournament

The Spirit of Cricket Global is proud to announce that one of cricket's greatest-ever batsmen, Barry Richards, has been appointed Tournament Ambassador for the inaugural Spirit of Cricket African T20 Tournament, to be held in Cape Town from 10–16 October 2026.
Richards will play an active role throughout the tournament, attending matches, engaging with players, franchise owners and officials, participating in tournament functions and presentations, while sharing his incredible knowledge and passion for the game with everyone involved.
His appointment represents another significant milestone in the continued international expansion of Spirit of Cricket Global following the success of its Australian Conference and the launch of its inaugural African competition.
A Partnership Built on Friendship and the Spirit of Cricket
Barry's appointment follows his outstanding involvement as Ambassador for the Spirit of Cricket World XI and Masters XI during the recent Over-55s International Tour to Cape Town in March 2026.
Throughout the tour, Barry spent valuable time with players from around the world, attending matches, sharing stories from his remarkable cricket career and engaging with touring members both on and off the field. His warmth, humility and genuine passion for cricket made a lasting impression on everyone involved, creating what many described as one of the highlights of the entire tour.
The World XI and Masters XI squads, comprising players from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka & the United States, enjoyed a truly unforgettable experience under Barry's guidance and friendship.
His appointment as Tournament Ambassador is a natural progression of a relationship that has already become a valued part of the Spirit of Cricket family.
Barry Richards is universally regarded as one of the finest batsmen the game has ever produced.
Although his international career was unfortunately limited through no fault of his own, Richards still left an extraordinary legacy, scoring 508 runs in just four Test matches at the remarkable average of 72.57, including two centuries and two half-centuries.

Such was the respect for his batting that Sir Donald Bradman personally selected Barry Richards in his Team of the Century, recognising him as one of the greatest opening batsmen the game has ever seen.
In March 2023, during the Over-50s World Cup in Cape Town, Barry was inducted into the Spirit of Cricket Hall of Fame.
He was proudly presented with Spirit of Cricket Hall of Fame Cap No. 29—a number Barry personally requested as a tribute to the 29 runs he scored in his very first Test innings, an innings he still remembers with enormous pride.

The exclusive interview, to be recorded over the coming week, will provide cricket fans with the opportunity to hear Barry reflect on his legendary career, discuss his involvement with Spirit of Cricket Global and share his thoughts on the exciting future of Masters cricket around the world.
The podcast will be released across the Spirit of Cricket Global digital platforms ahead of the tournament.
