Beyond the Boundary: Bringing the Story of Masters Cricket to the Screen
Spirit of Cricket Global is delighted to announce that experienced filmmaker Lizzie Kirkham will travel to Mildura this September with a film crew to begin capturing a documentary celebrating Masters Cricket, its people and its growing international community.
The production will continue in Cape Town in October, where Lizzie will cover the inaugural Spirit of Cricket T20 Africa Tournament. Filming across Australia and South Africa will give the documentary a genuine international flavour, bringing together different backgrounds and cricketing traditions through one shared passion.
At its heart is a simple question: what happens when the love of cricket outlasts the years traditionally associated with competitive sport?
For Masters cricketers, the answer is clear. You keep playing.
A Lifetime of Storytelling
Lizzie brings a remarkable breadth of experience to the project. Her career began with Channels 7 and 9 in 1960—yes, 1960—before she joined Cinesound in Sydney in 1963.
In the ensuing years, she built a freelance career writing and producing commercials, safety induction programmes and training films, particularly for the mining industry. Her work took her to remote Australian mine sites and to America, filming heavy earthmoving equipment and coordinating the travel, accommodation and logistics needed to bring productions together.
She later moved into location management, working on productions including A Fortunate Life, Shame, Clowning Around, Love in Limbo, Boundaries of the Heart and Windrider, as well as Midnight Oil’s Blue Sky Mine.
From Perth and the Kimberley to Mullewa, Toodyay, Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie, that work demanded research, resourcefulness and an ability to connect people with places.
After several years of retirement, Lizzie returned to filmmaking to co-write, produce and co-direct The Allied Games with Paul Williams. Filmed in Perth, Melbourne and France, the documentary explored Australian Rules Football’s wartime history and its continuing connection with Villers-Bretonneux. It screened on Foxtel for Anzac Day.
More recently, she has also assisted with corporate documentary productions for Woodside.
A Cricket Story Waiting to Be Told
The inspiration for this project emerged when Lizzie travelled to South Africa to watch her son Ben, compete in a masters cricket tournament and met Spirit of Cricket Global founder Anthony Telfer.
What she encountered was more than a sporting competition. It was a community of players still pursuing challenges, building friendships and finding purpose through cricket.
The documentary will explore the game’s evolution from its early beginnings to its international reach today, before turning to those whose passion continues well beyond their younger playing years.
Some have played at the highest level. Others have spent decades representing suburban clubs, country teams or local communities. All share something powerful: the desire to remain involved, competitive and connected.
Three Remarkable Cricketing Perspectives
The documentary will feature interviews with former Australian captain Kim Hughes, Spirit of Cricket Ambassador Henry Olonga and South African batting legend Barry Richards.
Their perspectives will add depth to the story, drawing on different countries, generations and experiences of international cricket. Alongside the voices of Masters players, they will help explore the game’s influence beyond the scoreboard, from identity and belonging to resilience, opportunity and the connections forged through sport.
From Mildura to Cape Town
In Mildura, the crew will capture the Spot On Hose & Fittings Spirit of Cricket Festivale, now in its third season, including the Over-60s and Over-65s State Challenge and the Over-50s T20 tournament.
Match action will sit alongside interviews, social functions and behind-the-scenes footage, revealing both the competitive intensity and the camaraderie that make these events special.
The journey will then continue to Cape Town for the inaugural Spirit of Cricket T20 Africa Tournament from the 10th - 15th October 2026. This second chapter will showcase the movement’s international dimension and the relationships being built between players and communities across borders.
Together, the two locations will provide a vivid backdrop to a story that is both deeply personal and genuinely global.

The guiding approach is simple: let the cricketers speak.
Their memories, ambitions, setbacks and achievements will drive the documentary. So too will the friendships, laughter and quieter moments that explain why they keep returning to the field.
For Spirit of Cricket Global, this is an exciting opportunity to share the values underpinning its community: sportsmanship, respect, camaraderie and unity.
For Mildura and Cape Town, it is an opportunity to showcase the venues, hospitality and people who help bring these tournaments to life.
Above all, the documentary will celebrate a love of cricket that does not come with an expiry date.
The years may change. The passion remains.
