Dennis Smallwood, a name synonymous with cricket in Western Australia, has had a remarkable journey in the world of cricket. From his early days at Mt. Baker juniors to becoming a prominent figure in the umpiring circuit, his story is a testament to his unwavering passion and commitment to the game.


Early Cricket Days

Dennis's cricket journey began at Mt. Baker juniors, where he honed his skills and nurtured his love for the sport. As he continued to excel, he found himself representing WA State at both the U17 and U19 levels, showcasing his potential as a budding cricketer.

His cricketing prowess didn't stop there. Dennis went on to feature in the highly competitive WACA 1st grade, representing prestigious clubs such as Fremantle CC, Claremont Nedlands CC, and even earning a few appearances for Perth CC. His contributions on the field were notable, leaving an indelible mark in the local cricket scene.


Transition to Umpiring

In 2012, Dennis played his last game of cricket, marking the end of an era as a player. However, his love for the game endured, leading him to explore a new role within cricket – umpiring. In 2018, Dennis embarked on this new chapter in his cricketing journey, and it wasn't long before his dedication and understanding of the game caught the attention of the cricketing fraternity.

By 2020, Dennis had risen through the ranks and achieved the prestigious status of a WACA first-grade umpire, a testament to his deep understanding of the game and his ability to make crucial decisions on the field.


A Rollercoaster of Emotions in Karachi

Dennis Smallwood's journey took an unexpected turn when he found himself in Karachi, Pakistan, umpiring at the O40's Global Cup. The past few days leading up to the tournament were filled with both joy and sorrow.

Tragedy struck on a Thursday morning when Dennis received the heartbreaking news of his beloved father's passing. This emotional blow came just before he was set to head to the Pakistan National Stadium for his umpiring duties. Social media, however, inadvertently spread the news before he could process it fully.

Amidst the heartache, Dennis was deeply touched by the cricketing community's support. Before the start of the game, a touching gesture was made – a minute's silence to honor his father's memory. Players, officials, and spectators from both Pakistan and UAE sides came together to pay their respects in this emotional moment, with the tribute even broadcasted on national television.

Dennis cherished his father's memory, expressing his deep gratitude for the support he received during this challenging time. His father, his first hero and forever his favorite superhero, left a lasting impact on him, instilling values like strength, loyalty, calmness, determination, and kindness.


Amidst the sorrow, there was also a glimmer of hope and joy for Dennis. Today marked his wedding anniversary with Fiona, his rock, his definite better half, his love, his best friend, his everything. In a heartfelt message, he expressed his love and gratitude, celebrating 27 years of shared memories and love. They look forward to many more years filled with future memories, excitement, and unwavering love.


A Dream Come True

Later that day, amidst the emotional rollercoaster, Dennis received a call in his hotel room – an invitation to umpire alongside the legendary International Cricket Umpire, Aleem Dar, in the Pakistan v Australia Semifinal at the Karachi National Stadium. It was a dream come true for Dennis, capping off an extraordinary few days of highs and lows.


The Future Awaits

As Dennis Smallwood prepares to officiate the Pakistan v Australia Semifinal, his journey is a reminder of the resilience and dedication that define cricketing individuals. From his humble beginnings at Mt. Baker juniors to becoming an esteemed umpire on the international stage, Dennis's story is one of passion, perseverance, and an unbreakable bond with the game of cricket.
