A True Legend of the Game

Barry Richards’ international career was short-lived through no fault of his own, yet his impact was extraordinary. In just four Test matches, he scored 508 runs at an average of 72.57, including two centuries and two fifties, a mark of his world-class talent.

Across 339 first-class matches, he amassed 28,358 runs at an outstanding average of 54.74, with 80 centuries and 152 fifties. He was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1969, and his remarkable stroke play during World Series Cricket is still spoken about with reverence.

Barry was also personally selected by Sir Donald Bradman in his Team of the Century — a rare and fitting tribute to his genius. In recognition of his contribution to cricket and his embodiment of its core values,

Barry was also inducted into the Spirit of Cricket Hall of Fame during the Over-50s World Cup held in Cape Town in March 2023 with cap #29 as seen wearing his cap with pride below.

Barry asked if we had #29, number that holds deep personal meaning — a nod to the 29 runs he made in his very first Test innings, a knock he remembers fondly to this day.

“We’re honored to welcome Barry Richards as Ambassador for our World XI and Masters XI. His record speaks for itself — he is one of the finest batsmen the game has ever seen and a true gentleman of cricket.

Barry’s values align perfectly with the Spirit of Cricket ethos. We’ve had the pleasure of hosting him previously in The Club House, and his friendship with Peter Walsh was instrumental in securing his involvement for the Cape Town tour.
