ICC and NT Cricket provides training and mentoring in Darwin for Michael Inkiriwang

Updated: Jun 23, 2023

Michael Inkiriwang, a dedicated cricket enthusiast & curator living in Bali, has been granted a remarkable opportunity for training and mentoring in Darwin, Australia, thanks to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the commendable efforts of Matt Sandery, Head Curator for NT Cricket. Inkiriwang has been actively involved in cricket development in Bali, particularly at the Udayana cricket ground and the Pandawa sports field.

Graeme Nichols, the Patron of Udayana cricket ground & Pandawa Sports field, recognized the importance of developing quality facilities to nurture local talent in Bali. He approached the ICC, emphasizing that the growth of cricketers would be hindered without adequate infrastructure. Acknowledging the significance of his plea, the ICC responded positively by facilitating Michael's trip to Darwin to work alongside some of Australia's finest curators in preparation for the recent Under 19 World Cup ODI qualifiers. During his time there, Michael actively assisted and supported in the installation of a new drop-in pitch.

Dreams do come true.

To the best of Graeme's knowledge, Michael Inkiriwang is the first Indonesian to be invited to Australia for training in turf wicket production. He has been privileged to learn from esteemed professionals such as Damien Hough, Head Curator of Adelaide Oval, and the Melbourne Cricket Ground's Second-in-Charge, Nick Lindley. Recently Michael was interviewed, highlighting his invaluable experience in this unprecedented opportunity. Michael may feel a bit self-conscious about his English when nervous, but his dedication shines through.

He was given the opportunity to support with the preparation of the drop-in pitch, roll wickets & learn many skills he will no doubt put into practice back in Bali at his home grounds.

Michael arrived in Darwin mid-June, where the ICC has generously provided accommodation, while the travel costs are shared between the parties involved.

Regrettably, Michael's involvement in this training program is on a voluntary basis, with expenses being covered by Graeme Nichols himself. However, the investment is deemed worthwhile due to the immeasurable value of this experience.

Having spent an enriching time in Darwin in preparation for the World Cup ODI qualifying matches, Michael Inkiriwang has been engrossed in intensive training. The mentors and individuals involved in guiding Michael's development have been exceptional, providing invaluable knowledge and support. Consequently, on Sunday, they extended their invitation for Michael to stay an additional ten days to participate in another tournament commencing on June 26, 2023.

While Michael Inkiriwang seizes this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Graeme Nichols remains in Bali to oversee the management of the two ovals. The dedication of individuals like Graeme and the collaborative efforts of organizations like ICC and NT Cricket play a crucial role in fostering cricket development and nurturing talent in various parts of the world.
